"All County" Visual Art Workshop HUGE Success!

A special thanks to Karen, Mitchell, and Bernie for working with the 2012 All County High School Visual Artists today at White Oak High School. Approximately 40 of the top visual artists from Onslow County gathered today for the round robin style workshops. OOPS members taught four separate groups painting from direct observation. The first group painted outside but the wind proved to strong and the other three groups painted inside thanks to "johnny on the spot" Karen who set up a still life for the remaining groups. It was a rewarding day for the students and OOPS artists!

Great opportunity for newbies to drop and look on as several OOPS artists give a plein workshop to groups of the All County Visual Artists high school students of Onslow County. This is our third year helping these students and promoting plein air painting while giving of our talents and time. We encourage as many OOPS members to join us as possible... the teaching portion will be handled by a select few but all members can help by example and giving individual attention to art students.... whatever you feel comfortable with. If you want to be a part of something very rewarding... you will not want to miss this one! The past events were huge successes!!

Karen, Stephen, Bernie, and Mitchell gave their time, talent, and Saturday to teach four 1 1/2 hour plein air workshops to the best high school artists of Onslow County. The day was a huge success as over 60 students from 5 county high schools (White Oak, Northside, Swansboro, Dixon, and Southwest) attended the workshop. Their day was divided into four round-robin style workshops which included plein air painting, clay modeling, figure drawing, and visual journaling.

OOPS Annual January "Life Class" Paint Out... Sunday, January 22, 2012.

Make plans to join the OOPS artists as we move inside where it's warm for our annual January "Life Class" paint out... Our model this year is Bernie, who has graciously volunteered to sit for us. The class will start precisely at 1pm (don't be late if you want a good spot) and end at 4:30pm. Bernie will sit for approx 20 minute sessions with a 10 minute break every half hour. Someone will be there as early as noon to set up in case you want arrive early. This will be a great learning experience for us all as we hon our skills of observation and application.

There will not be an organized paint out for December. Please let the group know if anyone plans to plein air paint during the month so hopefully members can join together for a plein air good time! Mark your calendar for Sunday, January 22, 2012 as our next paint out. It is our annual life class and will be at the Council for the Arts in the Jean Wenner studio like the past two years. Bernie is organizing the event with a model to be announced. The life class will start at 1pm sharp and last until 5pm. The studio will open at noon so the early birds can pick out the best spots! Painting is my passion. I taught art for 29 years and it was a treasured and meaningful experience, but I am ready to take on a new direction in my life. I want to be the student, not the teacher. I want to be a life -long learner and explore painting.
I earned my B.S. in Art Education from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 1980. Since 1980, I have taught visual art in Leland, Clarkton, Tar Heel and Elizabethtown schools. My commissioned pieces are sprinkled throughout Brunswick, New Hanover, Nash, Bladen County and Washington D.C.

My earlier work consisted of watercolor portraits commissioned by local residents of Bladen County. Today, my portfolio consists of expressionistic portraits, brilliant landscapes, colorful wildlife and nature.

On Saturday, October 8, 2011 from 9 am to 4 pm,, Plein Air Carolina will host a 2011 "Oil Painters of America Paint Out" in Salisbury NC. All interested artists will gather to paint on location, with the medium of their choice. In this artistic endeavor, Plein Air Carolina will partner with the Historic Salisbury Foundation and the Waterworks Visual Arts Center, allowing the artists to paint historic sites in the 36th Annual OctoberTour.

The Tour this year includes 3 private homes, 2 commercial properties, 2 museums, a living history encampment with enactors in period dress and an historic medical display at the Civil War home of Dr. Josephus Hall and 2 early American cemeteries. Trolleys and horse drawn carriages will be evident throughout the weekend. Food and vendors will be on hand during the day.

A reception, hosted by the Historic Salisbury Foundation, will be held Saturday evening from 5 pm to 7 pm, at the Hall House, 226 S. Jackson St. in the historic district. There, you are invited to exhibit your paintings, from that day, and 100% of all sales go to the artist. Following the reception, the North Carolina Symphony will be in concert at Catawba College for those who might wish to stay.

WHERE: Trent River Boat Access, Pollocksville, NC (on Highway 17N just before the Trent River Bridge turn right into public access area on the river.... shelter and restrooms available.)

NOTE FROM PATSY (Paint Out Organizer):
Let’s plan for August 28th. Maybe ask everyone if they’d like to have a little picnic afterwards, since there really is nowhere there to eat. There is only one restaurant there and it is closed on Sundays to the best of my knowledge. We could each bring a little something to share or bring our own individual brown-bag meals. Just need to let me know the count, and I’ll try to have water like Dean did last time since the weather is so hot. I haven’t been to Pollocksville yet, but will do so this week most likely Tuesday. The wildlife area is a right turn just before the bridge there in Pollocksville. I believe there is plenty of parking, and there is a covered picnic area with 2-4 tables. Not far from it is T-shaped pier and there are a few large shade trees in the parking lot. It’s not a large area, but I believe large enough to accommodate us.

As you know it is my turn to pick the place to paint. I thought we could all enjoy the "White Oak River Campground" ( http://www.whiteoakrivercampground.com/index.html ). If you go to the link you can see it is very easy to find. It is just about 1 mile south of Maysville on highway 17. There are plenty of river views along with lakes scenes, not to mention typical camping scenes to paint. This will be on Sunday the 24th of July. This is usually a pay to use campground but they offer to let us in to paint for free. I also reserved the picnic area because I would like to treat everyone to hamburgers and hotdogs around 5pm. If anyone would like to chip in it will be $2.00 a person to rent the picnic area but they DO NOT HAVE TO. I can cover it. I think it would be great to fellowship over food and talk about our paintings. Sound good to you? Tell everyone their families are invited. Please have them email me at dcr@ec.rr.com to let me know how many they may be bringing so I can have enough food.

I was just made aware that the New River Palooza event that we are planning to paint at tomorrow has been cancelled due to smoke from the nearby forest fire. They hope to do it at a later time.

This picture is of a gathering of people on the banks of the New River in Jacksonville, North Carolina (circa 1905). Like in days of old... people will gather once again on the banks of the New River at Water Front Park near the Pellitier House in downtown Jacksonville.

This year the Onslow Historical Society’s New River Banks Party will be May 29 from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Highlights will be the Chowder cook-off, OOPS Paint-out and this year the Card Board Regatta will take to the water. The Onslow Historical Society receives Grassroots Grant money from the Council.

The celebration party is FREE to the public! Make plans to attend...

OPPS artists will position themselves around the park and the historic Pellitier House painting en plein aire for one of their May Paint Outs from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm.

The Council absorbs the cost for six slots for the workshop but it is open to 12 artists at $60 each. Mike Rooney, artist and popular workshop instructor from Topsail Island will be giving a one day workshop called Colorful Underpainting in the Cape Cod Style on Saturday May 7th from 9am to 4 pm at the Council for the Arts at 826 New Bridge Street, Jacksonville, NC.

In the class Mike will discuss how to see more color and then paint it by underpainting with rich bright colors using his modified version of the techniques taught at the Cape Cod School of Art and used by popular artists Camille Prezwodek, Susan Sarback, Lois Griffel, and Peggy Kroll-Roberts. The Cape technique has a lineage all the way back to Monet and the impressionists who captured the flickering effect of light on subjects. Some have called it a "whole new way of seeing color" and is guaranteed to take your color sense to the next level. Watch the rich warmth glow thru the topcoat in the sunny areas of the painting (and rich cool colors under the shadow areas) as it mimics sunlight. This workshop regularly sells out so don’t wait, register today. Mike Rooney has made instructional painting DVD's for national art supply retailer Jerry’s Artarama and regularly teaches painting classes from Maine to the Florida Keys. Equipment needed for plein air work

Suggested materials list:

Easel and any supplies needed to paint outside. (i suggest you do a 6x8 outdoor painting outside before the workshop to see if you have everything you'll need)
A TV tray or portable table to put your stuff on if you don’t have a French easel or pochade kit
Pad of 140 lb watercolor paper for exercises
Oil painters! If you want to underpaint like I do in addition to your oil gear you will need 5 small tubes of acrylic paint and a small and medium synthetic brush:
Acrylic tubes of magenta, white, any yellow, red, and blue
Water to wash out acrylics
Several canvases or supports of your choice (no larger than 11x14). I suggest bringing at least 3-6x8's and 1- 11x14 for the one day workshop
Paint- at least one each : yellow, red, blue, and white, brushes, rags, and all materials needed to paint

WHERE: Visitor's Center Grounds of the USS North Carolina Battleship, Wilmington, NC. Parking is FREE, bathrooms and picnic shelters are available, and we have a GREAT view of the Wilmington Riverfront and/or Battleship. See photos provided by Ann. If you are coming from Jacksonville you will want to take the bypass near Scotts Hill... it will let you out on the other side of the Cape Fear River just below the Battleship. Simply follow the signs to the USS NC Battleship at that point.

WHY: Simply put... we LOVE gathering with like minded artists and painting outdoors!

WHAT ELSE: Picnic on the grounds at the USS NC Battleship! Bring a picnic lunch so we can eat (under the shelters there), socialize, and discuss our paintings and plein air adventures!

Bonnie and Terry Rogers have been so gracious to organize this month's paint out. They have been loyal to the OOPS group for over a year and we decided to travel outside the county line to their hometown of Burgaw, NC for this month's paint out. We'll meet at the old courthouse. The courthouse, the Confederate monument, the old jail, the old depot within a couple blocks, little shops etc.... offer plenty of painting subjects!

DIRECTIONS: Directions to Burgaw paint-out:

From Jacksonville, follow Hwy. 53 straight into Burgaw. After you get to the Hwy. 117 and 53 intersection, (there are 2 gas stations, an AutoZone, a Food Lion, a Hardee’s, McDonald’s, Andy’s etc.) continue through stop-lights to the stop sign. Turn left here and follow curve to next stop-sign. Turn left here (Walker St.) and you are in the town proper. The old courthouse imposes itself on your view and you can drive around all sides, the Confederate Soldier and gazebo is on the Wright Street side, but there is also the old jail, the old depot within a couple blocks, little shops etc. Very easy to drive around and check out locations.

From the Wilmington area:
Take the 398 Exit ramp from I-40 and turn left onto Hwy.53 and proceed as above.

Even though yesterday was John's first time modelling it appears he is a natural at it... so much that he has become an overnight sensation on the modeling circuit. OOPS Life Class for our January 2011 Paint Out

Make plans to join the OOPS artists as we move inside where it's warm for our annual January "Life Class" paint out. Our model this year is John Currie, who has graciously volunteered to sit for us... rumor has it that he may even bring his fiddle. The class will start precisely at 1pm (don't be late if you want a good spot) and end at 4pm. John will sit for approx 20 minute sessions with a 10 minute break every half hour. Someone will be there as early as noon to set up in case you want arrive early. This will be a great learning experience for us all as we hon our skills of observation and application. Hope to see you there!

My love of history and art mesh as one when it comes to plein air painting, especially early American plein air painting history as exercised through the Hudson River School. The Hudson River School wasn't a school but an art movement during the mid-19th century embodied by a group of landscape painters whose aesthetic vision was influenced by romanticism. The paintings for which the movement is named depict the Hudson River Valley and the surrounding area, including the Catskill, Adirondack, and the White Mountains; eventually works by the second generation of artists associated with the school expanded to include other locales. Hudson River School paintings reflect three themes of America in the 19th century: discovery, exploration, and settlement. The paintings also depict the American landscape as a pastoral setting, where human beings and nature coexist peacefully. Hudson River School landscapes are characterized by their realistic, detailed, and sometimes idealized portrayal of nature.

The artist Thomas Cole is generally acknowledged as the founder of the Hudson River School. Cole took a steamship up the Hudson in the autumn of 1825, the same year the Erie Canal opened, stopping first at West Point, then at Catskill landing where he ventured west high up into the eastern Catskill Mountains of New York State to paint the first landscapes of the area. The first review of his work appeared in the New York Evening Post on November 22, 1825

Cole's close friend, Asher Durand, became a prominent figure in the school as well. With the advent of photography, the need for realistic renderings gave way to the sublime as landscapes took on a more spiritual feel. There was no need to capture what a scene looked like, photography could do that, more emphasis was put on the mood, light, and feeling the artist gained from the scene and being in nature. This was the goal of the second generation Hudson River School painters (my favorites) like Frederic Church, John Kensett, and Sanford Gifford.

In gathering the visual data for their paintings, these artists would travel to rather extraordinary and extreme environments, the likes of which would not permit the act of painting in some cases. During these expeditions, plein air sketches and memories would be recorded and the paintings would be rendered later, upon the artists' safe return home. They would do their finished works in the studio from their sketches.

I recently returned from my own painting expedition in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in September. I was accompanied on this journey with two of my artist friends, Mitchell Morton and Stephen Greer. The three of us and several other plein air artists had the pleasure of studying at the Florence Thomas Art School under the master artist, Tony Griffin.

A blog post a mile long could be wrote about Tony concerning his art training, his artwork, and his workshop but I'll save that for another day. Of all the gems I brought home from his workshop the greatest was this... to capture the essence of the scene! With Tony's guidance I learned to simplify... before his workshop, I was putting too much emphasis on getting a finished painting. Tony taught me that plein air painting is a a gathering of color notes, a simplified composition, and a spiritual experience. I can still hear him saying... "Observe, Mix, and Apply" while I work at my easel. Thanks Tony!

Taking what I have learned from Tony Griffin and the Hudson River painters I now use my plein air pieces as studies for studio works. I am not so concerned about getting a finished painting in the field anymore. Below is one of the plein air paintings I did during the workshop. The scene is set along the New River in one of Tony's hidden spots.

Jean Wenner will sorely be missed...

Jean Wenner, founder and former Director of the Council for the Arts passed away December 14, 2010. She truly enriched her community and left a positive legacy in her memory. Her impact on Onslow County concerning the Arts is beyond measure as a pioneer with vision for the arts in our community. She was dedicated to her family and extended family of friends and artists. She opened doors and created many opportunities for countless local artists (myself and many OOPS artists included) who will forever be grateful for her dedication. She was an accomplished artist whose work crowns many collections throughout the country.

Meet the Artist ~ Ann Lees

Ann Lees ~ Artist

Born and raised in Cheshire, England, I was lucky to spend time at London University (majoring in French), in Paris and at Poitiers University, France, and three years in Madrid, Spain, soaking up the galleries and museums and art history of those cities. A love of the great works of art and a passion for nature and gardening have combined into my plein air painting.

I love to paint outside in nature, capturing the mood and light of the Carolina marshes, seascapes, shores and gardens. I paint en plein air in oils, and try to put onto canvas the beauty that I see: attempting to capture the fleeting moment, the ephemeral beauty of a garden, the light on water. It’s much harder painting outside than in the studio. You’re outdoors, and do battle with the heat, the wind, the bugs, the rain and the changing light. I love to feel I’m alone with nature. If you are at all successful, sometimes you can put into the painting, not just what you see, but the smells and sounds as well. Outside you paint quickly. You have to be spontaneous; capture, not a whole lot of detail, but the mood. I like to paint old forgotten buildings and rotting boats and things other people don’t pay attention to. I try to let the feeling of the place take over.

Raised in the North of England where there is much gray light, a Van Gogh exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery was my epiphany! I always wanted to paint in oils. I love the malleability, the richness and the smell of oil paint.

A more recent passion for life drawing has led me to work on the female form in pastels, watercolor and gouache.

Mainly a self-taught painter, I take as many workshops as I can with nationally known artists, and am fast becoming a workshop junkie!

My work can be seen at Airlie Gardens and FastFrame Gallery in Landfall Center near Wrightsville Beach, at Franklin Square Gallery in Southport and at ArtExposure in Hampstead. Shows and exhibits include Wilmington Art Association Shows, Art at the Arboretum, Art for the Masses, Associated Artists of Southport Shows, Arts By The Shore, Oak Island (First Place in Oil), Brunswick Arts Council Shows, Spadefish Gallery, and shows at Landfall.

I have been the Featured Artist at Montage Art and Design, Franklin Square Gallery and at FastFrame Gallery.

“We only go around once in this life and I want my audience to stop, take notice and think-not so much my thoughts, but what the painting inspires them to think or enjoy. Life is full of beauty despite all the “ugly” I choose to try to capture the beauty. I want my life’s walk to be in beauty and color.”

Primarily working in oils, Bobbie paints in southwestern and spiritual themes invoking thought, excitement and possibility.

Bobbie Mayes was born in Dearborn Michigan, the daughter of WWII Veterans. Mayes’ Father was a refugee from Poland. Her father later became a Psychiatrist. As a child, Bobbie loved to draw and her career as an artist began when she won first place for sculpture at a competition in Boyne Highlands Michigan, Bobbie graduated from Petoskey High School as a National Honor Society recipient. She was an exchange student to Montevideo Uruguay. As a military wife, Bobbie has traveled extensively. Having lived in Japan for three years, and three years in California’s Mojave Desert, where her love for the southwest began. In Taos, New Mexico she studied, painting and weaving, at the Taos Art institute under the instruction of the Navajo master artist Pearl Sunrise. Her husband’s military retirement currently provides Bobbie opportunities to embrace ocean scenes into her body of work.

Bobbie was educated at the following Universities: Saddleback College, College of the Desert, University of Maryland-graduating cum laude, and Golden Gate University -Graduate degree-M.S. Her pursuit of education lead to a varied work career as a: nurse, art teacher and mental health therapist. However, art has always called to her and she has answered the call. Primarily self taught, Bobbie received artistic training at the Interlochen Center of the Arts, in Michigan. Bobbie credits her artistic abilities to being born into a family of artists and musicians who valued the pursuit of the arts and encouraged her to paint. The highlight of Bobbie’s career was being invited, as a special guest and to display her work of Leon for the press opening of the show, at the North Carolina Museum of Arts (Raleigh) exhibition The Naked Soul, in May of 1993. Her great uncle, Leon Wyczolkowski, was one of the featured artists represented. Leon was a renowned impressionist in Poland who was a colleague of Claude Monet. As an emerging artist, Bobbie has been involved with local shows in Jacksonville, N.C. Her art can be found in private collections in Boston, New York, New Mexico, Korea, Florida, Chicago and California.

Despite the long road to recovery from a life threatening brain tumor, eight years ago, Bobbie has remained true to her art. Her bold use of vivid colors reflect the boldness she has experienced in her life.

Several OOPS members enjoyed a day of plein air painting and history at their additional October paint out at Hammocks Beach State Park. The paint out was in conjunction with a Civil War living history program put on by the Jacksonville, Pelletier, and Morehead City Sons of Confederate Veterans organizations.

As you know, our gallery show "OOPS 2" will be on display at the Council for the Arts during the month of October. I just spoke with Executive Director, Connie Wenner, and she needs your five OOPS paintings turned in by Tuesday, September 28th. She will hang the show on Wednesday the 29th. Make plans to attend the Opening reception on Sunday, October , 2010 from 2:20-4:00 PM.

September's Paint Out for OOPS will be our annual involvement with the Washington, New Bern, Carteret, and Oriental Plein Air groups. As usual we will all converge on the centrally located town of New Bern ( anywhere in the downtown historic district). The event will take place Saturday, September 11th and Sunday, September 12th, 2010. There is NO set schedule... simply agree to paint on one or both days to help promote the tradition of plein air painting worldwide.

PAWa: What kind of unique experiences does night painting bring?

Rick: Painting a location at night gives you a different viewpoint on a subject and a greater sense of intimacy with that location than you would otherwise have. After all, you are seeing it in a condition that few people see, especially if it is very late at night. You come away with a feeling of real connection to it, like you have been let in on some special secret about it that no one else knows. You also will have experiences with the nocturnal animals of that area that you would not otherwise see during the day. One night when I was out on this open field under a full moon, an owl suddenly lit off a branch high above me and came swooping down right over my head. For the next several minutes it flew silently over the field behind me skimming just a few feet above the ground. It was an incredible thing to watch and such an inspiration that I named the painting "Owl Moon" after a children's book I used to read to my kids.

PAWa: What would you advise someone who wants to try out night painting?

Rick: I think it helps to have a lot of daytime plein air work under your belt first. It will help you when you go to mix your colors. A lot of what you do at night is based more on faith than actually seeing. You don't really know what colors you have until you bring it indoors, so you just tell yourself that I know these colors produce this effect in daylight so I trust that it will do the same at night. Sometimes you bring it indoors and have some surprises and so you might try to make some minor adjustments. For the most part though, what I do on location is what stays.

Yesterday' July Paint Out at the Maysville Rock Quarry was challenging to say the least. The heat index was 109 degrees while we were painting.

DIRECTIONS:
From Jacksonvile/south:
Travel north on highway 17 towards Maysville there will be "White Oak river campground" on your right after you go through Belgrade. You will cross a bridge and enter into Jones county as you PASS the campground. Look to the right and you will see a white and red "fishing" sign. There will also be a yellow "live minnows" sign under that. Turn right there. It is a dirt road. As you follow it you will see Maysville cemetary on your left. Follow the road to the right. The road will curve to the left about a quarter mile ahead and a two lane dirt path will go straight. FOLLOW THE ROAD!. You are now there! Congratulations to Sherry Thurston on her recent retirement from the Onslow County School system as Art teacher at Dixon High School.

But... that's not all...

Her painting "My Beach House" was recently featured on the cover of the Topsail Advertiser.

She (along with several other OOPS artists... more details coming soon) will have three paintings exhibited in the reinCARnation Exhibit at the Wayne County Arts Council in July.

Also I wanted to let you and your friends know I will be teaching some acrylic painting classes for beginners and intermediates at Michael’s in Jacksonville this summer.

Michael's and Chartpak have partnered to offer a wonderful deal on painting supplies, coupons and classes which I will be teaching soon. The products are by Grumbacher assuring quality. These classes will be fun even with your first try. It takes time and practice to paint but in the two hour classes you will have the basics down so you can do your first landscape! Several OOPS! Members enjoy a day with Mike Rooney

Several OOPS members recently enjoyed a one day workshop given by artist and friend, Mike Rooney. Mike taught us the Cape Cod style of painting which is colorful and FULL of light. We went through various exercises, watched him do a plein air demo, and then painted ourselves. The style was very challenging for many of us but it was a breath of fresh air to be taken out of our comfort zones and learn something new. A special thanks to the Council for the Arts for subsidising and organizing this awesome workshop!

Brittany and Betty of the New River Foundation, have extended an invitation to any OOPS members to paint and join them in celebrating their 15th year anniversary with a festival on the New River, dubbed the "New River Palooza!" The festival is set for Saturday. June 26th (10am-4pm) at Riverwalk in Downtown Jacksonville.

This is a great opportunity for those who missed our paint out in Swansboro earlier this month. I"ll be painting in the Blue Rodge Mountains and won't be there... have FUN!

We are working on a date for our July Paint Out... I'm hoping we can paint at the Rock Quarry in Maysville since it was rained out in April. I'll find out from Dean and get back with everyone.

I'm so glad they want to participate--it is going to give people a great chance to see plein-air paintings that are a bit unconventional. the dates for the reinCARnation event are July 1 - 31 (end date is a bit negotiable right now) with an opening reception on July 1 from 5-7pm. (if any of you have an interest in doing an demo outside in our garden during the opening reception, we'd love to have you!) Just got back from another two days of painting on the coast. Although it was under clouds, I have had time to photograph the paintings I did. But rats! Now, when I want so much to write this newsletter, it looks like the sky is going to open up, and Murphy is telling me that when it does, I'd better boot down.

I've developed such a case of computer-dependency. When I'm not painting en plein air, I'm painting à l'ordinateur (at the computer). And that's of course where I write as well. So it's almost like I'll be forced into domestic chores if lightning strikes. Horrors!

Last week an invitation from a friend led me to a couple of locations on the coast that are a little off my beaten path. One of them - "the poppy fields" near Emerald Isle - I've painted before. The other, Moe's Bug Shop, is a place that every time I've passed it, I've said, I've got to come back and paint this place. Please see the two paintings that I did at Moe's on my Hot Off the Easel blog - just a click away. Both paintings I'm pleased with, and I'm glad I did two different ones as they will show better this way should they find their way to a gallery.

The idea to paint the poppy field was for a couple of plein air painting groups to converge on the same location. This is what is popularly known as a "paint-out".

A little background . . . In 2003, I was invited to teach at the Arts Council of Wayne County. One of the things I put on my supply list for my students, was a stool for painting outside (en plein air). I still remember the grimace I saw on my students' faces. Because I had painted en plein air since 1981, and had belonged to a group in Minnesota who each spring through fall, scheduled regular paint-outs, I just kind of assumed it was something with which every landscape painter is familiar. Just before my first scheduled solo show at the Arts Council in 2004, the Goldsboro News Argus published a big spread about my work. The title of the article was, "She's Out and About".

The next year [2005] I put feelers out to all the artists I knew at that time who might be interested in putting together a plein air group and scheduling regular paint-outs. Only one artist responded positively. She is now a member of Greenville Brushstrokes, a group in Greenville, NC, who meet, probably nine months of the year to paint in the Greenville area. Other plein air groups have cropped up as well. I understand there's a group out of Oriental, NC, there's an OOPS group (Onslow Outdoor Painting Society), there's Outdoor Painter out of Alamance County in the Piedmont. Also in the Piedmont area is a group that call themselves Paint NC. Holy Cow! What's happened?

I'm hearing thunder!

Okay, thunder is a good point. Plein air painting, to a degree, is weather-dependent. My [low] cut off temperature to paint outside is 50º. In North Carolina, because of the dampness, 50º is about the equivalent bone chill factor as 30º in Minnesota. A friend of mine in the North Country, in fact, was pictured on a front page of the Saint Paul Pioneer Press painting en plein air in the snow. This is not a joke. He's a committed artist that has come to know that Mother Nature is the best teacher of color and atmosphere.

I'll save the pros and cons of plein air painting for a future newsletter. I realize not all of you are artists, and may find the process of painting a topic that is of little interest.

Rumor had it that the "poppy field" was all weeds this year. That may be true, but only if you refer to larkspur as weeds. What we found instead was a beautiful field of larkspur, with only occasional poppies. My buddy and I showed up at the field both Friday and Saturday. No one else showed up either day. The paintings I'm sharing are the result of two pretty much no-show paint-outs.

15 OOPS (Onslow Outdoor Painters Society) artists converged on the small community of Kellum to paint in the gardens of John and Carolyn Meadows and Bernie and Maggie Rosage Sr. Bernie Jr., Dean, Mitchell, Penny, Ann, John, Bonnie, Gordon, Pat, Stephen, Karen, Sherry, and Patsy were among the artists present. Bernie's parents were gracious hosts and provided us with some great refreshments. An approaching thunder storm cut our painting time a bit short but we have a great time of fellowship and critique on the covered deck at Bernie and Maggie's house.

This year the Onslow Historical Society’s New River Banks Party will be May 30 from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Highlights will be the Chowder cook-off, OOPS Paint-out and this year the Card Board Regatta will take to the water. The Onslow Historical Society receives Grassroots Grant money from the Council.

The celebration party is FREE to the public! Make plans to attend...

OPPS artists will position themselves around the park and the historic Pellitier House painting en plein aire for one of their May Paint Outs from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm.

OOPS Paint Out Sunday, May 16th @ 1PM ~ SWITCH to PLAN B AGAIN...

Due to state cutbacks PLAN B is officially put into action. Our May 15th Paint Out at the wildflowers near the Emerald Isle bridge has beeen cancelled due to state cutbacks... apparently the roadside wildflower program funding was cut and what has always been a beautiful spot is now a fields on grass with a few sporadic flowers here and there. The photo below was taken last Sunday of the spot. With the flowers gone Plan B proves to be a great choice. The date and time remain the same but the new location is set for Kellum Loop Road. The chosen spot will give many varied opportunities to plein air paint from as shown in the photos below.

All County Art Students Workshop BIG Success!

OOPS Members; Karen Crenshaw, Stephen Greer, Bernie Rosage, and Mitchell Morton recently taught an all day workshop on plein air painting to the top high school art students in Onslow County. The 24 "All County Art Students" represented several high schools in the county and worked through four different workshops in a "round robin" style of teaching. At days end... parents and friends gathered to see the fruits of their labor. The event was organized by several high school art teachers and Janae Copeland, Onslow County Curriculum Coordinator for the Arts and Foreign Languages. The students were very attentive and a joy to work with... we hope this is an annual event to highlight the young visual artists in our community.

OOPS fare well at Kinston CCA's 3rd Annual Plein Air Paint Out

The Kinston Community Council for the Arts (Kinston CCA) is a non-profit organization that promotes art in Lenoir County. Kinston CCAs annual paint out is held each year as a part of the BBQ festival on the Neuse. This year the paint out was for three days in downtown Kinston, beginning April 28 through April 30th. Paintings were juried and then were for sale as the art gallery next to Mother Earth Brewery during the Festival on the Neuse. OOPS (Onslow Outdoor Painters Society) members present were Bernie Rosage Jr., Mitchell Morton, Karen Crenshaw, and Susan Cheatham. Our friends... Tesh Parekh, Art Tyndall, Ruth Cox, Mary Page Whitley, and Charles Philip Brooks were there and we met many new friends. 25 artists entered the competition... 1st place went to Ruth Cox, 2nd to Bernie Rosage Jr., and 3rd to Tesh Parekh. Bernie, Mitchell, and Karen sold several paintings during the first viewing. We can't wait till next year!

"Plan B" Success for April Paint Out!

We had to make a weather call and throw "Plan B" into action so we wouldn't miss painting with our new friends Phyllis and Sharon from Salisbury, NC and Plein Air Carolina. "Plan B" was painting a still life from life in the garage at Audio Plus. The rain held out but we still felt like we made a good call due to the high winds. Our apologies to anyone who didn't get the last minute change and ended up at the rock quarry. We still plan to paint there in the future.

I have mentioned to several of you about or opportunity to work with the Onslow All County Art Students all day May 1, 2010 at White Oak High School. Deb Pylypiw, art teacher at WOHS, has helped organize the event with several high school art teachers throughout the county. This event is a special opportunity to highlight the brightest visual artists in our county and give the proper acknowledgement they deserve. It is also a way to give credit to the fine art instructors in our county. It is a privilege and honor for OOPS to be asked to teach the plein air portion of this round-robin style event. Karen, Stephen, and I have agreed to teach the sessions while all the other OOPS members will paint along side the students and offer help and encouragement... for those feeling uneasy doing that we simply want you to show up and paint. Please make plans to attend this event on Saturday, May 1st at whatever time you can... if it's all day or for a couple hours... no matter... your time and talents will be appreciated. The students (approx. 15 per session) will be working in a limited palette of acrylics... red, yellow, ultramarine blue, and titanium white. Deb has sent us a schedule for the days events which is listed below .

WHAT: OOPS! April Paint Out (organized by Phyllis Eaton Steimel and Dean Remington)

WHEN: Sunday, April 25, 2010 from 1PM until... some members plann to arrive at Noon to get an early start.

This date was selected so Phyllis Eaton Steimel and two other members of the group, Plein Air Carolina, can paint with us. Phyllis has be trying to coordinate dates to paint with us the past two years... this is a great opportunity to do so. Dean organized the location.

WHERE: Maysville/Belgrade Rock Quarry Fishing Lakes. Meet at the Fishing Info and Bait Shack. Detailed directions from Dean below.

WHY: Simply put... we LOVE plein air painting! Will be GREAT to paint with some new friends!

Newbies welcome... all mediums and skill levels... simply show up with your gear and be prepared to have fun!

What the heck is OOPS and how do I join the FUN?

DIRECTIONS:
From Jacksonvile/south:
Travel north on highway 17 towards Maysville there will be "White Oak river campground" on your right after you go through Belgrade. You will cross a bridge and enter into Jones county as you PASS the campground. Look to the right and you will see a white and red "fishing" sign. There will also be a yellow "live minnows" sign under that. Turn right there. It is a dirt road. As you follow it you will see Maysville cemetary on your left. Follow the road to the right. The road will curve to the left about a quarter mile ahead and a two lane dirt path will go straight. FOLLOW THE ROAD!. You are now there! You can let them know at the shack you are with the painting group and you will not be charged anything. If you are bringing someone with you who likes to fish it is $5.00 for the day. No license is necessary if they stay on the 2 private lakes. If they bring a boat, only electric motors are authorized. You can also rent boats there too.

Explore and be inspired by the glowing colors of Spring! Paint gardens, flowering trees, open landscape and more, during Fayetteville’s Annual Dogwood Festival. We will delve deeper into the aspects of plein-air painting such as creative composition, “seeing” then mixing the colors you really want, dealing with green, simplifying your painting and more. We’ll work rain or shine with instruction sessions, instructor demonstrations, and lots of time for you to paint with individualized guidance at your easel. I will “coach” you in whatever style you work in: from tight Realsim to loose Impressionistic.

The Coastal Carolina Artists & Crafters Guild is participating in this celebration and has invited the public to join in with a painted umbrella contest !

Deadline for submission is April 17th.
